Participa's investments in the energy sector began in the late 1990s. After the inception of BSB Energética S.A. and Araguaia Centrais Elétricas S.A., Participa has become an Independent Producer of Electrical Energy, with primary focus on the development and implementation of Small Hydroelectric Plants (Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas - PCHs*).

Both BSB Energética and Araguaia Centrais Elétricas have always operated under the principle of "environmentally friendly hydropower generation". From the early stages of site assessment, all projects are evaluated by independent environmental consultants who work with the main objective of integrating the engineering design with the surrounding environment.

**The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel - Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) defines Small Hydroelectric Plants (PCHs) as generating units with installed power ratings over 1 MW (Megawatts) and equal to or less than 30 MW, and with a reservoir area equal to or less than 3 square kilometers (1.16 square miles).
